By directing the user to all the resource material you would find when searching for that company you are essentially cutting out the middle man. Most of the information you find about a given company is written on other websites, so why not let the internet speak for it. Now, opening pandora's box can be a dangerous thing and it's much easier for an agency to create this platform than a brand. That's why I applaud Skittles for doing just that. Skittles.com now becomes a portal to everything Skittles. From youtube, to twitter and so on.
